What are “Summer Camps for Troubled Teens?”

A summer camp for troubled teens is typically an adventure-based or wilderness short-term therapy program for teens struggling with emotional issues, mental health issues, substance abuse, or other behavioral difficulties. A summer program may either be a stand-alone residential program that only operates in the summer months, or a short-term option for a year-round residential program.

Is a Summer Camp or Longer-Term Program Better for My Teen?

If you are reading this, you may have already made the decision that you and your family need a temporary break from the issues your teen is causing in your home. But now you may be struggling to decide how long that break should be. Is three months in a summer camp for troubled teens really long enough to get your child back on the right track? Do we need family therapy or counseling in addition to sending our child away? Since each family and situation is unique, the answer to this question is not concrete.

However, as a general rule, our experience has shown that a summer program is effective in changing the lives of teens that have exhibited a few or more of the following characteristics for less than a year:

  • Involved with extracurricular activities during the school year but gets into trouble with free time in the summer.
  • Usually respects authority outside of the home, but disrespects parental authority.
  • Gives in easily to peer pressure and negative influences around them.
  • Shows extreme laziness and lack of motivation during free time—i.e spends unreasonable amounts of time sleeping, napping, playing video games or watching TV.
  • Shows a growing selfishness and sense of entitlement. Seems to think the world revolves around him/her.
  • Beginning to experiment with drugs, alcohol, or other illegal substances.

Our school has an affordable tuition rate for the 8 weeks, compared to other stateside programs, plus the unique location being in the Dominican Republic offers many things that domestic programs and other traditional teen boot camps cannot: an opportunity to focus, a shift away from material value, a fresh start, healing for your family, a chance to rediscover hope, an integrated approach and personal time of growth for your teen.

Benefits of Troubled Teen Summer Programs

The benefit of summer programs for troubled teens exhibiting characteristics such as those listed above is that it can serve as a “time out” for negative behaviors, without interrupting school, athletics, or other extracurricular programs at home in which your teen is thriving. A summer away from the negative influences of home can also help stop bad behaviors or patterns before they escalate to a more serious level.

If you feel that your teen has already reached this “more serious level,” don’t panic—there is still time to get help and get them back on the right path. If your teen has shown these signs for a year or more, it is likely that one of our summer camps for troubled teens will only begin to scratch the surface of changing the life of your child. As the saying goes, “The problems didn’t start overnight, and they aren’t going to go away overnight either.” If this is the case you may want to consider a longer, year-round residential program. This is especially a better option if your teen is struggling to succeed in their current school setting, or refusing to attend school.
