3 Ways to Prepare for a Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic

Preparing for a week-long mission trip can be overwhelming, especially when you are looking to be in a completely different culture. You likely have a lot of questions regarding what to bring, what the community will be like, and what types of projects you will be helping with. There are a few other things to consider as you prepare: your physical, mental, and spiritual needs for your trip. Here are some helpful tips to get ready for a week of service in the Dominican.

1. Physical Readiness3 Ways to Prepare for a Short Term Mission Trip in the Dominican Republic - Crosswinds

First, you’ll want to prepare yourself by checking the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) website and see what they recommend for your immunizations. Do you have all recommended shots and are they up to date?

It is also important to bring a reusable water bottle with you that you can refill on a daily basis.  You may be involved in work that is physically demanding in warmer temperatures than you’re used to. Some types of projects you might work on in the DR:

  • House renovations
  • Construction
  • Painting
  • Vacation Bible School for local children

2. Mental Preparation

Ready yourself with an attitude of serving other people. No matter the job and no matter the interaction, your week is about how you can be there for others.

  • Be as prepared as you can for the unknown, recognizing that you’ll be in an environment that is unfamiliar to you.
  • The food you eat on your trip might be different than at home.
  • Your sleeping arrangements may not reflect the comfort you are used to.
  • You might hear or see something unusual that may shock you (like someone else’s living situation or life story).

Be open to embracing everything, trying new things, and trusting the Lord that His plan is perfect for you in that exact moment. God hasn’t called you to live a life that is comfortable, so bathe your week in prayer knowing that your week won’t be your usual schedule or lifestyle.

3. Spiritual Planning

Crosswinds - Dominican Republic Mission Trips

A wonderful way to spiritually prepare yourself is through praying and journaling. Before you go on your trip:

  • Ask God to open your heart – to service, to the unknown, to learning.
  • Ask God to show you something new and to draw closer to you as you get ready to serve Him.
  • Continue these prayers while participating
  • Keep record in a journal all your thoughts and prayers before you leave on the mission trip and while you’re participating.

Having something tangible to look back on can be helpful as you process your experience. You never know how your heart, mind, and relationship with the Lord may change and this way you can see how God moved and challenged you through service.
