Local Non-profit Commits to Mental Health Support in Indiana Schools

Crosswinds Launches The 600 Hours Campaign to fund Counseling for Studentscounselor speaking with child in school

[FORT WAYNE, IN] – July 18, 2018 – Crosswinds, a local non-profit offering full-service counseling with in-home and online options, is launching a state-wide movement addressing the mental health needs of school-age children across the state. They want to ensure that students are equipped for success with access to the most important school supply they’ll need this year — counseling support.

On July 18, Crosswinds is kicking off The 600 Hours Campaign to fund more than 600 hours of counseling for children in Indiana schools during the 2018-2019 school year. The campaign will carry through the end of August to draw attention to the needed support for students, in the form of counselor or licensed therapist on-site in schools.

“Nearly 50 percent of adolescents struggle with a mental, behavioral, or emotional issue. At Crosswinds, we are making sure they are prepared for the challenges that a new school year may bring,” says Kevin Hedrick, Executive Vice President of Crosswinds. “With school violence and suicide rates on the rise in our state and across the nation, we believe the answer to these crises is sometimes as simple as access to emotional support.  While it is the school’s job to focus on academics, Crosswinds can offer the emotional and mental support that students need while they are at school to deal with these struggles and allow them to effectively learn.”

During the 2017-2018 school year, Crosswinds placed therapists in six Fort Wayne-area elementary and high schools. They believe the impact has been overwhelmingly positive. One Crosswinds therapist notes, “I worked with a student and his parents after the student had a physical altercation with a peer. His parents acted on my suggestion and got him the help he needed to deal with his anger. His actions were actually a sign of an underlining depression, which if, undiagnosed, could have led to something much worse.”

The cost of putting a counselor on-site in a school is approximately $100 per hour. With The 600 Hours Campaign, Crosswinds is seeking to raise $60,000, or 600 hours, for counseling schools across the state. To learn more about sponsorship opportunities or to donate, visit crosswinds.org/600hours.
